What Is a Wingdings Translator?
A Wingdings translator is a tool that swaps every letter you type for the matching symbol in the Wingdings symbol font, and back again. Because the tool maps keys to fixed pictures — a strict one-to-one cipher — encoding and decoding are always exact. The output is real Unicode text, so the symbols can be copied and pasted anywhere, even on devices that don't have the Wingdings font installed.

The History of Wingdings in One Minute
Wingdings launched in 1992 with Windows 3.1, built by type designers Charles Bigelow and Kris Holmes out of their earlier Lucida Icons, Arrows and Stars fonts. Three versions shipped almost together — Wingdings, Wingdings 2 and Wingdings 3 — followed by Webdings in 1997 with the dawn of the web. Each key on your keyboard prints a small picture instead of a letter, which made Wingdings a playground for hidden messages, 1990s urban legends, and — decades later — the mysterious language of W.D. Gaster in Undertale. The full story lives on the font guide page.
Wingdings for Undertale & Gaster Fans
If you're here for Gaster: he speaks in capital letters rendered with the original Wingdings font. Our Gaster translator auto-uppercases your text before converting, reproduces Entry Seventeen exactly, and decodes Gaster-style messages back to English. Fans of the Deltarune sequels use the same mode for Wheelers entries and Goner dialogue.
Wingdings 1 vs. 2 vs. 3 vs. Webdings
| Font | Personality | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Wingdings 1 | Everything: hands, faces, mail, stars, crosses | Gaster text, secret messages, bios |
| Wingdings 2 | Pointing hands, files, circled numbers | Decorative lists, annotated docs |
| Wingdings 3 | Nothing but arrows — every direction | Diagrams, directions, flow charts |
| Webdings | Web-era icons: houses, tools, transport | Status lines, emoji-style flair |
Try each one without leaving this page — the translator above renders all four fonts from a single input.
Wingdings vs. Emojis: What's the Difference?
Emojis are colorful pictures with their own code points and platform-specific designs. Wingdings symbols are monochrome font glyphs that later received Unicode code points, which is why some of them can render as emojis on certain platforms. That overlap is exactly why we built the Classic text-style switch: when it's on, we append U+FE0E — a variation selector that asks for the plain text look — so your check marks stay check marks instead of becoming green boxes.
Sending Secret Messages the Fun Way
Because Wingdings is a simple key-to-symbol cipher, it's perfect for light-hearted puzzles: encode a spoiler, a riddle answer, or a birthday message and let friends decode it here. Type the message, copy the symbols, share them anywhere — then send them the link to this page as the "decoder ring". Teachers use it for classroom scavenger hunts and puzzle lovers embed it in geocaching hints.

- Community builders — Discord server names, channel topics and bios that stand out in the member list.

Copy, Paste, and Font Notes
This tool outputs real Unicode characters — not a picture of the font — so your symbols survive copy-paste into Discord, Roblox, TikTok bios, Google Docs and plain-text email. Some rare Wingdings glyphs never received Unicode equivalents; for those keys we substitute the closest matching symbol. On Windows and Mac the genuine fonts ship with Microsoft Office, and here's how to check if you have them.
